Myopia Management

What is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is an eye disorder that causes blurry vision at distance and is usually caused by an eye that has grown too long during development.

What are the risks associated with having myopia?

Myopia is associated with an increased risk of glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and retinal detachments. All of these diseases are sight threatening disorders and we can now reduce the risk of our patients developing them using myopia management therapies.

What is myopia management?

Myopia management, also called myopia control, is a set of treatment options that slow down the progression of nearsightedness in children and teenagers. The treatments available in the U.S. include specialty soft contact lenses, orthokeratology, and medicated eye drops. Typically, children who become nearsighted have vision that gets worse every six months to one year and glasses need to be continually updated. This change in glasses prescription is usually caused by the lengthening, or stretching, of their eyes. It is this eye growth that increases the risks for diseases later in life. By slowing down the worsening of their vision, we improve their quality of life and protect the health of their eyes long-term.

How do I get my child started on myopia management therapy?

Call one of our offices to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Lauren Downey and she will evaluate which of these treatment options is the right one for your child. She will also discuss what lifestyle changes can help reduce the progression of your child’s myopia.
